Marlene Gilson is a Wadawurrung elder who lives in Gordon. She was digging and found a really, really old hammer head. It was attached to a handle with sinew. Marlene thinks the owners used to use it to kill animals quickly. She is very proud of the find.
The aboriginals made mortars and pestles out of flat stones. They used very hard stones, which they would leave around the fire when they left the area. They were not afraid that other people would steal their special tools.
They also made canoes and coolamons out of trees. After they cut out the wood, it left a scar and so the tree is called a scar tree. The first photo in the slideshow is of a scar tree. This tree grows near Lal Lal Falls.
Aboriginals didn't have hospitals. So the women had trees called a birthing tree. These are very large trees with the middle hollowed out by fire. The woman gave birth to their children in the tree. Men were not allowed to be near the birthing tree - it was secret womens' business.
