Church Life
In the early days, before heating, attending St John's could be a challenge and numbers fluctuated with the weather. Comments in the register include: 85 attended - roads very bad; 30 attended - boisterous weather; 18 attended - bitterly cold and heavy sleet, 16 attended - blowing a hurricane and raining in torrents; 100 attended - flies intolerable.
Parish Life has ebbed and flowed over the years. The main activities parishioners got involved with were:
- Sunday School, including an annual picnic to the Ballarat Gardens, which was a highlight.
- Ladies Guild - who have been active since the 1920s providing fund raising and cleaned and maintained the buildings. The also provided flowers each week.
- Church of England Mens' Society, formed in 1923. Debating and dances were some of the activities run by the CEMS. The society folded in 1941 through lack of members.
- Girls Friendly Society, formed in 1925, a society for young women.
