The Important Mountains
By Lily and Sophie
There were three important mountains in the Wadawurrung area: Black Hill (Kirrit Barreet), Mt Buninyong, Mt Warrenheip (which means emu feathers).

Mt Elephant is an old volcanic mountain that is just outside of Derrinallum. In the Dreamtime there were two men who had a fight. They fought each other to the death. Then they became Mt Buninyong and Mt Elephant (the Aboriginal name for Mt Elephant is Gerinyelam). The craters on each mountain are the wound holes which were made by spears in the fight.
Mt. Buninyong means bended knee when Bunjil went to up to rest at Lal Lal falls Bunjil rested his elbow on his knee and that became Mt. Buninyong.
